Laser Etching: Where Tech Meets Craft

How I combine digital design with traditional materials to create something that feels both precise and organic.

People are often surprised when they find out I use a laser cutter. It doesn't fit the image of a traditional artist. But for me, it's just another tool, like a brush or a palette knife, that lets me make the things I see in my head.

The process starts digitally. I sketch ideas on paper first, then recreate them in design software where I can refine the geometry, adjust line weights, and plan how the material will respond to the laser.

The Magic of Material

Every piece of wood behaves differently. Birch plywood etches clean and crisp. Oak has a warmth that absorbs the beam differently, giving softer edges. Cherry wood darkens beautifully, producing rich contrast without any staining.

That's what keeps it interesting. The digital design is precise, but the natural material always adds its own character. Every grain pattern, every knot, every tiny imperfection becomes part of the finished piece.

Bridging Two Worlds

What I love about laser etching is that it sits right at the intersection of technology and traditional craft. The computer gives me precision I could never achieve by hand. But the wood, the finishing, the assembly, that's all handwork.

The result is something that feels both contemporary and timeless. And that's exactly where I want my work to live.
